Goat Dairy Focus Groups

The Kingston Economic Development Corporation in partnership with the County of Frontenac and OMAFRA, coordinated information sessions on the Goat Dairy Industry on March 23 this year.  The sessions were well attended and provided an opportunity for the community to learn about the Feihe project in Kingston and to discuss the complexity of the goat dairy industry.
There were two takeaways from the sessions that we believe economic development offices can play a role in.  First, there is potential for sustainable growth in the industry, and second, there is an opportunity for us to develop a regional approach to providing farm operators with access to the tools needed to be successful.  We heard the concerns of both current and potential farm operators, and we need to learn more.
In collaboration with our economic development colleagues across eastern Ontario, Kingston Economic Development Corporation is coordinating Focus Groups throughout the region on May 29, May 31 and June 1.  The purpose of the focus groups is to engage with both current and potential goat dairy farm operators to explore the question; “What do you require to be a financially viable/successful operation?”.  The goal of the sessions is to have a detailed discussion and collect information in order to develop a pilot program to facilitate the growth of the goat dairy industry in eastern Ontario.  The vision is for economic development offices across eastern Ontario to collaborate in program development, funding application and delivery.
